A comparable coating enquiry connects the work area, the existing surface condition and the requirements the owner wants the yard to consider. An area total or a general request to repaint leaves important scope questions open. Build the package around identified areas and the documents available for each one.
Gisan Shipyard’s surface preparation and coating services form part of its ship-repair scope. This guide organizes information for an initial enquiry; the technical requirements and responsibilities for an individual job still need confirmation.
Identify each work area and its boundaries
Use the vessel’s own location and drawing references to define the surfaces included in the request. Mark the intended areas on an available plan or sketch, and link photographs and condition records to those same references.
- The hull, deck, compartment or other surface location described in the existing records.
- The area proposed for work and the edges or adjacent surfaces whose inclusion is uncertain.
- Known dimensions or estimated quantities, with units and their measurement or estimation basis.
- Areas that have not been assessed and quantities that depend on further inspection.
- The owner’s intended work period and known access constraints.
Keep the area to be assessed separate from an area already specified for treatment. Do not combine confirmed and inspection-dependent quantities into one figure without identifying the difference.
Describe the surface condition from the records available
Attach dated photographs, previous coating or repair reports and any relevant inspection findings. Identify whether a photograph shows an overview or a particular finding, and record which work area it represents.
Keep observed damage, recorded coating condition and the owner’s requested intervention distinct. State where the available records are incomplete or where an older report may no longer describe the surface. Do not assign a coating composition or repair decision from appearance alone.
Connect the owner specification and product documents
List the owner’s coating specification and any available product information, technical data sheets or application guidance. Retain product names, document revisions and dates from the records rather than supplying assumed values. Identify which documents concern the existing coating and which concern a proposed replacement.
Jotun's general preparation and application discussion describes an agreed specification as central to the manufacturer’s work. For an enquiry, keep the requested treatment connected to the actual specification and product documents available for the job; a general technical article does not replace those documents.
Flag missing or conflicting requirements. Ask who will confirm the applicable preparation requirement, coating system and any proposed change to the specification. A shorthand description should not be expanded into a technical grade, method or acceptance rule without its governing document.
Separate requested treatment from unresolved technical decisions
For each area, state the work the owner is requesting and the basis for it. Distinguish an established instruction from an option, a request for assessment or an item that will depend on the condition found.
Identify which technical parameters remain to be confirmed by the relevant parties. Keep those decisions outside the initial quantity schedule rather than inserting a default thickness, environmental limit, application method or curing period. The enquiry should make the missing decision visible, not supply it.
Describe access and adjacent repair work
Record the access information already available and identify nearby steel, piping, machinery or outfitting work that may affect the surface package. Ask whether removal, protection and reinstatement of adjacent items are included in the proposed scope.
Where work on the underwater hull raises a docking question, discuss the docking services context against the vessel and planned work. A coating-area list does not establish vessel suitability, facility availability or a docking arrangement.
Identify known dependencies between repair items and the coating request. Ask who will establish the work sequence and the arrangements affecting access or application conditions. Keep execution arrangements distinct from the owner’s description of the surfaces.
State inspection, records and responsibility questions
Reference any inspection or completion requirements already provided by the owner, coating supplier or other relevant party. Connect each requested record to the area or work item it concerns and ask who will provide, review or witness it.
- Who will confirm the specification and address differences between the documents?
- Who is expected to supply the coating products and their technical information?
- Which preparation, coating and adjacent-work items are included in the proposed scope?
- Who will agree the inspection and completion records being requested?
- Which decisions or quantities remain conditional, and how should they be identified in the response?
A request for a record does not establish a universal inspection tolerance or approval authority. Keep the proposed work, technical decision and requested evidence as separate parts of the enquiry.
Compare quotations against the same area schedule
Provide the same dated area list, document register and scope references to the yards being considered. Compare what each response includes, excludes or assumes, especially for uncertain quantities, access, product supply and adjacent work.
Record differences against the relevant area or item rather than comparing the total figure alone. Keep provisional quantities and specification questions visible when a quotation is revised. The package does not establish a guaranteed output rate, coating warranty or completion duration.
