A local coating repair is difficult to compare when “touch up damaged areas” is the entire scope. The visible damage, the preparation area and the final coating boundary may not be identical. A ship coating touch up scope should define those boundaries clearly enough for the owner and yard to discuss the same work.
This guide addresses localized repairs and their interfaces. For preparation of a broader coating package, see the separate surface preparation and coating work-package guide.
1. Identify the location and existing system
Use a location reference that survives beyond a close-up photograph: deck, compartment, frame reference or a marked general arrangement, as appropriate. Describe the known substrate, existing coating system and service exposure. Where the coating history is unavailable, say so; appearance alone does not establish product compatibility.
Collect product information and previous repair records where available. Technical data sheets, safety data sheets and application guides serve different purposes. Jotun’s technical information resources identify these document types; the applicable product documents and responsible technical advice must govern the actual job.
2. Separate damage from the proposed work area
Mark the observed defect, the area proposed for preparation and the intended coating boundary separately. Adjacent sound coating may form an interface requiring assessment, while nearby equipment or finished surfaces may need protection. Record uncertainty instead of assuming an arbitrary extension around every visible defect.
- Location and photograph reference.
- Observed damage and current extent.
- Proposed preparation boundary.
- Proposed coating boundary and interface.
- Nearby work, access and protection requirements.
- Items requiring verification before the scope is agreed.
The marked area is a scope record, not a substitute for a technically suitable preparation or coating specification.
3. Agree what the quoted area includes
Ask how quantities will be established and how different locations or preparation conditions will be distinguished. Define whether the offer includes access, masking, containment, cleaning, protection and reinstatement, or lists them separately. A single square-metre price can conceal different obligations.
Agree who records the final boundaries and when the measurement is checked. Avoid presenting a provisional estimate as the final invoicing quantity. Comparable descriptions support cost clarity without claiming a universal lowest price.
4. Resolve interfaces before application
Local repairs can sit beside steel renewal, welding, piping removal or other work. Identify which activities must be complete before the coating stage and who releases the area. A coating boundary may need revision if adjacent work changes; capture that revision against the same location reference.
Product compatibility, preparation method, application conditions, overcoating and return-to-service requirements need the applicable technical assessment. Do not import a generic drying time, preparation grade or film thickness into an enquiry without establishing that it applies. This guide makes no product recommendation or coating-performance guarantee.
5. Record checks against the agreed local scope
Before work, agree the relevant inspection and completion records, their responsible parties and any required attendance. Link recorded observations to location and product information. Photographs are useful supporting evidence but do not alone demonstrate that all technical requirements have been met.
Keep exceptions visible
If an area is inaccessible, adjacent work remains incomplete or a technical question is unresolved, record the exception and next decision. Do not mark a whole location complete merely because one portion has received a finish coat.
6. Hand over the boundary actually completed
Reconcile the original marked areas, approved changes and completed areas. Provide the agreed records and identify any deferred locations or owner actions. This creates a clearer basis for later maintenance and makes the handover less dependent on personal recollection.
