A useful hull steel renewal enquiry connects three things: the affected location, the condition already recorded and the intervention being requested. An estimated tonnage alone leaves those questions open. Build the scope around identifiable items and retain the evidence behind each one.

Gisan Shipyard’s steel and structural works scope includes plate renewal and hull-related steel work.

Start with the evidence and the decision status

Thickness measurement and close-up examination are different record types. DNV’s hull-survey guidance lists them as separate scope items, HTM and HCU. Identify whether an attachment records measurements, inspection findings or a decision already communicated about the proposed intervention.

Do not present readings from selected points as one conclusion for the whole area. Keep any known original or nominal thickness separate from measured values. If a renewal boundary or acceptance decision has already been issued, reference that document. Do not insert a general percentage or thickness threshold where no applicable decision is available.

Make the marked location easy to find

Use a work-item reference that can be found on the drawing, in the measurement report and in the photograph set. Replace broad descriptions such as “tank steel” with the location details already available to you:

  • Compartment or tank name and any known frame, deck, side or structural-member reference
  • A marked drawing or sketch identifying the requested area
  • An overview photograph and a closer image of the finding
  • Related measurement or inspection records, with dates and location references
  • Areas that cannot yet be accessed or whose boundaries remain unclear

Flag differences between older drawings and the present arrangement. Distinguish locations that share a similar name and retain document revisions and units. This identifies the enquiry location; it does not constitute approval of a new repair plan.

Turn the available information into steel items

Material and dimensions

Associate known material information, plate or profile dimensions and thickness with the relevant item. State whether the information comes from a drawing, an existing record or a component marking. Leave an unreadable or conflicting material grade open for clarification.

Quantity and boundaries

Where a piece count or estimated renewal area is available, identify its basis: a marked plan, known dimensions or an initial site estimate. Distinguish estimated quantities from confirmed work items. Keep areas awaiting inspection visible rather than absorbing them into a single total.

State the records and inspection inputs requested

Provide available material records and any inspection, class or completion-document requirements already communicated. Identify who is expected to provide or review each record, where known. An enquiry list should not assign welding or NDT methods or establish approval authority.

Describe access and adjacent work

Show the existing access with photographs or a sketch. Identify any outfitting, coating, piping or adjacent equipment expected to be removed for access. Ask whether removal and reinstatement are included in the requested item; an area of plate alone does not describe those interfaces.

Note any known dependence on the vessel’s condition or the sequence of other work. The practical arrangements and responsibilities for access and execution need separate clarification in the technical discussion.

Place steel work within the repair package

If steel renewal forms part of a wider yard period, identify priorities and shared access with the other ship repair and maintenance items. The ship repair RFQ preparation guide covers the broader vessel, scheduling and attachment information.

Use consistent labels for confirmed items, options and areas awaiting inspection when discussing the initial scope. A clear package supports review; it is not confirmation of price, acceptance or duration.

Share the marked steel scope

Send the marked locations, available reports and known material, dimensions and access information through Gisan Shipyard’s contact page. Include the preferred yard period and the scope questions that remain open.
